Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston is more than an affordable homebuilder
It is a movement that believes in the transformative power of a home—not just as a physical structure, but as a foundation for building a better future for all of us. Since our founding in 1987, we have built 127 homes in the Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury, Roslindale, and South Boston, and in surrounding communities, providing housing solutions to individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes.
Funds generated by Home for the Holidays will support the construction of critically needed affordable homes for local families with low-to-moderate incomes in Greater Boston amid the region’s severe housing crisis. Proceeds will also provide income-qualifed existing homeowners with critical home repairs so that they can remain safely in their homes for years to come.
Building Homes
With more than 45 homes in our pipeline, Habitat Greater Boston is directly addressing the housing crisis by creating safe, affordable, and decent homes. Boston has persistent barriers that make the housing crisis exceptionally difficult to address with housing among the oldest in the nation, high and rising construction costs, and vacancy rates among the lowest in the country. Habitat Greater Boston’s work strikes at the heart of these issues. We work with local municipalities, legislators, and community organizations to create safe and affordable housing across the city’s many diverse and changing neighborhoods.
Building Communities
At Habitat Greater Boston, we build community. Our work takes a community-based approach to neighborhood revitalization, elevating the voices of those who live in the communities where we build. We leverage our resources and partnerships to invest in community-led projects that improve the lives of current and future residents. Communities grow and thrive when neighbors and future homeowners come together to build a home.
Building Hope
Affordable homeownership has impacts far beyond addressing the basic need of shelter. Homeownership creates the conditions that free families from stress and fear. Decent, stable housing is foundational to increased feelings of safety and self-confidence, stronger child development and growth, a higher sense of community connectedness, and increased civic engagement.
Building Stability
Homeownership builds stability. Habitat Greater Boston homeowners cited financial stability as their most valued aspect of homeownership. The money saved on housing is often invested in training and education.
“This is my house”
The day Justine thought would never come arrived on a picture-perfect late summer Thursday. Standing in the sunlit living room of her new Habitat Greater Boston home with her mother and two young daughters, she held back tears of joy. “I still can’t believe it. I came to this country with nothing – five dollars in my pocket,” said Justine, who moved to Boston from Uganda. “Now I own a home!” Justine and her neighbors, Abdi and Hodan, partnered with Habitat Greater Boston to build their two-family home in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood in 2020. They hung in through multiple delays caused by COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions, never giving up hope. Like all Habitat Greater Boston partner families, Justine and Abdi put in hundreds of hours working with staff and volunteers, helping to build their home from the ground up. They hammered nails, raised walls, laid floor boards, and became friends.
Partnering with Habitat Greater Boston made it possible for Abdi and Hodan to stay in their current neighborhood – the apartment they lived in before is walking distance away. For Justine, moving into the new space was something of a homecoming. The family had lived nearby in Jamaica Plain, but rising rents forced them to move outside the city. Moving back means the family will be close to the girls’ school and Justine’s job at a nearby hospital. “This means everything to me and my family. I can’t believe I’m bringing my girls home,” she said. “I will never forget this opportunity. I feel so happy.”
